Navigating the Challenge of Quitting a Job: A Personal Journey

Written on

Chapter 1: The Decision to Leave

The decision to leave my job stands out as one of the most challenging experiences I've faced. My heart raced, and I felt nauseous for a week leading up to it. After three days of waiting for my boss, the company president, to be available, I realized I could wait no longer. Taking a deep breath, I dialed his number during my commute home, my hands shaking. At that moment, I knew there was no turning back.

For years, I had been worn out by my routine. My schedule involved waking up at 3:30 a.m. for a 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift, which was already demanding. Add to that a grueling 55-mile commute in Northern Virginia's notorious traffic, and it felt like a relentless cycle.

Overtime was a constant presence. Though my employer insisted it was optional, they would frequently request monthly reports on hours worked and how we planned to cover any shortfalls. This led to a daily grind of waking up at dawn, showering, preparing my lunch and coffee, and spending an hour in traffic before starting my workday.

I had contemplated changing jobs for years. The long commute and extra hours drained my energy, but I hesitated. On the surface, it seemed like the ideal job; I was well-compensated, received excellent raises and bonuses, faced minimal stress, and enjoyed good relationships with both my best friend and the company management. Yet, the toll on my health was becoming unbearable.

Sleep deprivation affected my well-being, leaving me fatigued and often irritable. I struggled with migraines and had to meticulously manage my caffeine intake just to function. After 15 years of this lifestyle, it became increasingly clear that I was failing my family, especially my young son.

I waited for the right moment—after securing a new contract and assembling a qualified team—before realizing that my wife’s pregnancy had ignited my motivation. After two years of pondering a remote job, I finally took action. I applied for numerous positions, conducting video interviews and being transparent about my strengths and weaknesses, all while battling a fear of failure.

Despite my reservations, I secured a remote position in DevOps. While I was thrilled, the thought of quitting my job loomed over me. I felt as though I was betraying my colleagues, particularly my close friend. I had shared so much of my life with them, yet I felt compelled to keep my plans secret.

The phone call to my boss was surprisingly easier than I imagined. His shock left him momentarily speechless, and as I hung up, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief and freedom. However, the next day brought a wave of emotions—my friends and I cried, my boss expressed anger and sadness, and I felt the weight of leaving.

I received heartfelt letters and gifts that made me feel unworthy of their kindness, and I will forever cherish those moments. Although my relationship with my boss may never be the same, my friendships with coworkers endured, and we continue to connect daily online.

Leaving this job marked my fourth career transition in IT and my ninth overall. It was an experience unlike any other—more painful than I had anticipated. Yet, I emerged from it with newfound insights about myself, my values, and the areas in which I needed to grow.

Now, in my remote role, I find it to be a perfect fit. I'm learning constantly and able to spend quality time with my family. Gone is the anxiety that once accompanied my nightly routine. Life is filled with both beautiful moments and heartaches, but to truly experience the best, one must push through discomfort. Embracing challenges fosters personal growth, and the more we tackle difficult tasks, the easier they become.
