Chapter 1: A Lesson in Life's Absurdities
Life can often feel wildly absurd. Just yesterday, after a refreshing outing at the public pool, my girlfriend and I decided to grab some groceries. The heat made us lazy, so we opted to take a scooter back to our apartment. I even had a few minutes left on my rental plan from the day before.
I quickly opened the app, found a nearby scooter, and loaded our grocery bags. However, when I tried to accelerate, it refused to budge. After several attempts and a mix of frustration and amusement, I parked it, locked it, and hopped on the metro instead. Still determined to make use of my remaining minutes and avoid the steep walk from the metro station, I sought out two other scooters.
We struck gold! I unlocked one for my girlfriend and dashed to the second. After loading it up, I faced the same problem; it wouldn’t move. While she sped away, I struggled until, after multiple tries, I finally gained momentum. We managed to synchronize our speeds at a traffic light, but soon, I found myself lagging again.
As I watched her ride toward our home, my scooter remained stubbornly unresponsive. I tried everything—wiggling, twisting, you name it. Then, as if to add insult to injury, a kombucha can in my bag exploded, showering me and the groceries in fizzy chaos. In that moment of absurdity, I couldn’t help but laugh. Perhaps we all need to take a moment to appreciate the ridiculousness of our lives.

Fighting Life as It Is: An Unfair Battle
I learned this lesson through experience. One sunny evening in late April 2013, I led my football team as captain. Fresh off a victory against our biggest rivals, we were confident heading into the match against a weaker opponent. However, doubt crept in after a night of celebrating a teammate's 18th birthday a bit too enthusiastically.
Initially, everything seemed to go well; we scored early on. But soon, mistakes began to pile up—a poorly timed pass here, a lost challenge there. My mood worsened as unnecessary shots were directed at our goal, culminating in my first goal conceded. Frustration boiled over when a defender’s short pass led to a penalty against me.
Despite my protests, the referee issued a yellow card. I watched helplessly as the opponent scored from the penalty spot. In that moment, I felt like a volcano ready to erupt. My anger was misdirected, and in a fit of rage, I kicked the goalpost, resulting in a double fracture of my foot. I was left unable to walk properly for three months.
The Hard or Smart Way: Choosing Our Lessons
This painful experience taught me a crucial lesson: anger and frustration often serve no purpose. More importantly, it highlighted our power to choose how we respond to life's challenges. Life is unpredictable, filled with bizarre and tough situations, but we can decide whether to resist or embrace them with humor and grace.
Even a smile, even with a few missing teeth, can be more charming than none at all. I’m no saint—I still occasionally find myself frustrated by uncontrollable situations. But I’ve been working on finding laughter in life's randomness, much like my unexpected kombucha shower.
You can cultivate this perspective, too.
