For years, I was committed to high-impact workouts, teaching Zumba for seven years and reveling in the energy of my classes. I thrived on HIIT routines and cardio workouts. However, a series of events compelled me to reconsider my fitness approach. The onset of Covid halted my classes, I began experiencing hip tendonitis, running left me feeling sore for days, and I was approaching my 50s.

This period of reflection made me realize that my health and well-being mattered more than fitting into a specific dress size or maintaining a certain weight. I understood that my body was evolving as I entered perimenopause, prompting me to adopt a gentler exercise routine. Although I had previously found yoga and pilates uninteresting, the positive feedback about these practices encouraged me to give them another chance.

In January, I subscribed to a yoga, pilates, and meditation app, and it has been a life-changing decision. I now dedicate at least 20–30 minutes to exercise almost every day, forming a habit that I genuinely cherish due to the wonderful feelings it brings.

    I explored various YouTube workouts until I found an instructor whose style resonated with me. Connecting with the right teacher can make all the difference.

    If unexpected events arise, simply adjust your workout time instead of skipping it. Flexibility is key when exercising at home.

  5. Be Kind to Yourself:

    Life happens, and it's okay to take a break when necessary. Focus on returning to your routine as soon as possible, even if it means doing a quick stretch or a short session.

  6. Set Realistic Expectations:

    Avoid jumping into advanced yoga poses or pilates moves if you're a beginner to prevent frustration or injury. I learned to start again with simpler routines, which were far more enjoyable.

  7. Plan Your Sessions:

    Selecting your routine ahead of time minimizes procrastination. Knowing what you're going to do before starting helps me maximize my limited time.

  8. Consistency Is Key:

    Some days will be harder than others, but making an effort to engage in any activity will yield results. As I experience benefits, consistency has become more achievable.

    I maintain a basic weekly structure to ensure a full-body workout while avoiding repetition.

    Showing up for yourself each day is a significant achievement. Some days will be tougher than others, and that's perfectly okay. Adjust your workout to fit your needs.

    As time passes, you'll become more attuned to your body. Celebrate small victories, like deeper stretches or improved balance. Acknowledging your progress is essential.

You don't need to invest a lot of time or effort. Just 20–30 minutes daily is sufficient. A yoga mat and a sports bra are helpful, and many different workouts are available on YouTube. I personally enjoy Boho Beautiful and recommend considering a subscription to solidify your commitment.

By committing to your health and well-being, you'll start to perceive yourself differently. Over time, you'll develop a deeper respect for your body, listen to its signals, and witness its strengthening and toning. Each day, your confidence will increase, and you'll become more at ease in your own skin.
