Chapter 1: My Transition to the Z Fold4
This has been an intriguing experiment!

As a long-time iPhone user, I embarked on a three-month journey with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4. My late entry into this experience stemmed from a couple of factors. For one, Samsung hadn’t reached out to me until recently—understandably, as the tech review space is saturated with creators today. It’s essential to establish credibility before receiving high-end devices from prominent brands.
Spending nearly $2,000 on a phone just for its aesthetic appeal felt excessive, and I questioned the worth of reviewing such a device that seemed so unattainable for the average consumer. However, the increasing volume of positive reviews and ongoing discussions made me rethink my stance.
Eventually, I decided to get the Z Fold4—thanks to Samsung—and here are my insights after three months of usage.
Section 1.1: Did I Really Switch?
Contrary to popular belief, my switch wasn’t absolute. When reviewers claim they’ve fully transitioned from their iPhone to another brand, they often still keep their iPhone close at hand. This doesn’t undermine their integrity; it’s simply part of their profession.
While two acquaintances in the YouTube community (Alex Gear & Tech and Pete Matheson) have genuinely switched, such cases are uncommon. Throughout these three months, the Z Fold4 has been a constant companion; however, my iPhone 14 Pro Max remains my primary device, integral to my workflow. I’ve also explored several other smartphones during this period, which diverted my focus from the Z Fold4. Still, I’ve never felt the urge to stash Samsung’s innovative foldable device away.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Positives of the Z Fold4
The Z Fold4 impresses with its speed and design. Equipped with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, it delivers a premium smartphone experience, which is essential for its price point.
The camera also produces stunning images. I won’t delve into its performance too deeply here, as it aligns with Samsung’s typical standards—I've covered this in detail in my recent S23 Ultra review. In optimal conditions, the Z Fold4’s camera excels.

However, it sometimes struggles with blue skies and can be inconsistent with shutter speed—typical traits for Samsung. Nonetheless, the camera rarely disappoints me, and the uniqueness of the Z Fold4 often overshadows its minor shortcomings.
Additionally, the device serves as an excellent platform for media consumption. Whether you use it as a Kindle or take advantage of its impressive multitasking capabilities, the expansive screen provides a delightful experience.
There’s a peculiar satisfaction in snapping the Z Fold4 shut after use.
Section 1.2: The Drawbacks of the Z Fold4
The Z Fold4 is undoubtedly a divisive device, and I can understand the hesitation. It requires a genuine desire to invest in such a product, especially since the price can exceed £2,000 for the 1TB variant. While the Z Fold4 offers a distinctive smartphone experience, it’s not for everyone.
There are a few technical drawbacks. Given its folding design, a noticeable crease runs down the center of the internal display, more prominent than that of the Flip4. My review unit has also developed an unpleasant creak when opened.

The narrowness of the Z Fold4, while making it pocket-friendly, results in a cramped keyboard experience on the front display. Though some users claim adjustments can be made, I haven't found a satisfactory setting yet.
Battery life is another concern; this device lasts only a day, unlike others that can stretch beyond two days. Consequently, I find myself charging the Z Fold4 more frequently than my other devices. The next iteration needs to match the battery performance of the S23 Ultra.
Nevertheless, my list of negatives for the Z Fold4 remains surprisingly brief after three months of use.
Chapter 2: The Future of Folding Phones
This video discusses an iPhone enthusiast's switch to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, sharing insights on what led to their decision and their experience with the new device.
In this video, the presenter explains why the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 convinced them to move away from the iPhone, providing a fresh perspective on the latest foldable technology.
Should Apple Consider a Foldable iPhone?
Apple has likely been exploring the concept of a folding iPhone for quite some time, but two main factors hinder its release.
First, the technology isn’t quite ready for Apple’s standards. The visible crease and potential creaking sounds during use would likely fail Apple’s rigorous testing.
This is where I appreciate Samsung’s approach; they push boundaries regardless of the risks. Apple, however, maintains a higher threshold for imperfections. A folding iPhone would need to be flawless before it could be unveiled.
The second reason for the delay likely relates to the iPad mini. If Apple were to introduce a folding iPhone with a large inner display, it raises questions about the iPad mini's position in their lineup. How would the two platforms coexist without causing confusion?
I would gladly welcome a folding iPhone if it were to be released, but I’d also worry about its overlap with existing products and potential impacts on iPad mini sales.
This dilemma is complex, which might explain why we may not see a folding iPhone from Apple anytime soon. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!
