Why Are So Many People Dissatisfied with Their Jobs?

Chapter 1: The Alarming Truth About Job Satisfaction
Are you content in your job?
A Gallup survey reveals a staggering statistic: there's an 85% likelihood that you aren’t. Disturbing, isn't it? This finding is certainly troubling.
The Survey Results
Referring back to the poll, it reveals that a significant 85% of individuals either dislike their jobs or feel disengaged, with Japan facing an even more concerning figure of 94%. In the U.S., the situation isn’t much better, with 70% of workers expressing dissatisfaction. Although this survey is somewhat dated, I suspect that the landscape hasn’t shifted dramatically in the past five years.
Interestingly, the animosity isn’t always directed at the organization itself. Many employees tend to have issues with their managers. High-performing staff frequently join companies only to leave because of their supervisors. Often, these managers may lack the skills necessary to effectively guide a modern workforce.
Why Does the Typical 9-to-5 Feel So Dreadful?
Is the traditional workday really that unbearable? I can't say for certain, as I’m still in college and haven’t experienced a full-time job yet. However, I recently read "The Millionaire Fastlane" by MJ DeMarco, which has profoundly influenced my perspective. I highly recommend it.
In considering a 9-to-5 job, a few significant drawbacks come to mind that would likely contribute to my own dissatisfaction:
Long Hours and Commuting
On an average workday, many individuals find themselves with little leisure time. When you account for working hours, lunch breaks, commuting, and morning routines, you often exceed 10 hours daily. Traffic jams can make this even worse. After accounting for cooking, eating, and sleeping, there’s hardly any time left for personal pursuits.
Lack of Autonomy
As a conventional employee, you typically have no control over your income or the company’s success. You simply carry out assigned tasks. This contrasts sharply with entrepreneurs, who possess full control over their ventures and can significantly increase their earnings without being confined to an hourly wage. DeMarco refers to this employee dynamic as “temporal prostitution.”
Enriching Others
The reality is that many employees end up making others wealthy without benefiting themselves.

The internet is a powerful tool in this endeavor, providing endless opportunities to generate income online. Personally, I’ve managed to earn $3,400 monthly through Medium in a short time. I plan to launch a blog and delve into affiliate marketing, aiming for $10,000 per month, which is likely more than many jobs would offer after graduation.
