Shooting for the Moon? Here's a Better Approach to Achieving Your Goals
Written on
Chapter 1: Rethinking Goal Setting
Many of us have heard the saying, “Aim for the moon; even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.” While this advice sounds uplifting, it often leaves out a crucial detail: the potential for disappointment. Striving for lofty goals can sometimes lead to feelings of inadequacy, even if you make progress.
Instead of chasing unattainable dreams, consider setting more attainable objectives. By doing so, you may find that your motivation increases, which acts as the fuel to keep you moving forward.
Section 1.1: The Power of Small Steps
One of the most effective methods for improving in challenging areas is to start small. It’s essential to be realistic about your capabilities. For instance, if you currently read no books a year, jumping to one per week may be too ambitious. However, could you commit to one book every three months? Perhaps one a month?
Being honest with yourself about what you can realistically achieve is key to establishing a routine that builds confidence and momentum.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Long Game
When setting goals, it helps to consider long-term averages rather than short bursts of effort. For example, I attempted daily posting on Medium but quickly found it overwhelming. Missing even a single day left me frustrated and tempted to abandon the effort entirely.
My new strategy focuses on averaging four submissions per week. Surprisingly, this has led to an average of six articles per week, allowing me to batch my writing. Reducing the pressure of daily deadlines means I can plan for vacations without stress.
Section 1.2: Steps Toward Realistic Achievements
Achievable goals are those that you can maintain without sacrificing other important areas of your life. While it may be tempting to dream big, the reality is that steady, incremental progress is more sustainable.
Instead of reaching for the stars, concentrate on taking one step at a time. Then, take another step. Keep this up, and you'll find yourself making real progress.
