Quality vs. Quantity: The Real Debate on Medium Articles
Written on
Chapter 1: The Common Misconception
There's a growing trend in Medium advice suggesting that prioritizing quality over quantity in articles is the way to go. However, I respectfully disagree with this viewpoint.
No matter how well-crafted or insightful an article may be, if it doesn’t receive a boost from the Medium community, its visibility is limited to a mere 24 hours. Within that time frame, numerous writers are publishing their own pieces, which inevitably leads to a decline in views for your article.
To illustrate this point, let’s take a look at my article views over a recent period.
Please observe the view metrics from the last five days. The initial three days were when I actively wrote and promoted my articles, while the final two days coincided with my absence due to a team-building event. Had my absence extended further, I suspect the decline would have been even steeper.
Where does the issue lie?
While I concur that it’s essential to produce quality content that fosters a loyal audience, neglecting to publish consistently—ideally every day or every two days—can significantly diminish your view counts. Consequently, this drop will adversely affect your Medium earnings.
In my perspective, staying informed and engaged daily is crucial. If writing about new topics isn’t feasible, make sure to promote your existing articles on platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or X. This proactive approach helps maintain visibility among readers, reducing the likelihood of a steep decline in views during your absence.
What are your thoughts? Do you prioritize quality, quantity, or a balance of both?
