A Plea to Apple: Rethinking Software Updates for Users

Rethinking Software Updates
Dear Apple Team,
As I initiate the installation of a new macOS update, which amounts to a hefty 13 GB, I find myself questioning the necessity of this update, particularly as it lacks any features that appeal to me personally.
I understand the competitive landscape you're navigating—constantly innovating and pushing out new features must be a daunting task. However, do you truly believe that relentless growth and feature releases are the only pathways to success? Progress isn’t always linear; it can be revolutionary and often arises from unexpected directions, requiring bold risks to be taken.
I genuinely believe that you possess the capability to implement the changes that many users yearn for.
The current reality is that if we continue to install all these updates—acknowledging that security is a significant concern—we inadvertently consume storage, memory, and processing resources. This is why our devices become sluggish and battery life diminishes.
A Possible Solution
I propose the development of a 'Basic macOS' and 'Basic iOS' version. This would entail a streamlined system focusing on essential functionalities only, devoid of non-removable apps and unnecessary updates. The updates could be strictly security-focused, allowing users to opt-in for additional features as they wish.
An added benefit of this approach is that it could be marketed as an environmentally conscious choice, backed by impressive statistics illustrating its positive impact on reducing carbon emissions. This would not merely be a case of greenwashing; it could genuinely contribute to environmental sustainability.
I have a deep appreciation for my Mac and iPhone; they are exceptional products, and your efforts are commendable. However, I firmly believe that these large updates are unnecessary for a vast number of users and can even detrimentally affect the devices we cherish.
Rest assured, I’m confident that many consumers will continue to purchase the latest iPhones and embrace all the trendy updates. Your marketing strategies are clearly effective!
Yet, there remains a segment of the market that seems to be overlooked. Perhaps you could consider catering to this demographic as well?
Or maybe it’s just me feeling the weight of age…?
