Chapter 1: The Learning Curve

Recently, I embarked on the journey of creating my first YouTube vlog, and it was quite the eye-opening experience!

Section 1.1: Audience Awareness

Before diving into content creation, I took a moment to think about who my intended audience would be. Although this project was part of a university assignment, I aimed to achieve two objectives simultaneously. I recognized that my professors and classmates were my primary audience, but I also wanted to deliver value to my existing YouTube subscribers, email followers, and social media contacts who view me as a freelancer and entrepreneur. To connect these two audience segments—academics and entrepreneurs—I selected a topic that could resonate with both.

Subsection 1.1.1: Researching the Best Practices

With no prior experience in filming, I knew I needed to learn from the experts. After settling on my vlog topic, I dedicated several hours to watching my favorite YouTubers—an enjoyable form of “research.” I paid close attention to their presentation styles, including camera angles, editing techniques, overlays, and music choices. This analysis helped me outline a storyboard filled with ideas, setting the stage for my filming process.

Section 1.2: Filming Techniques

I used a Canon 600D, a DSLR I’ve owned for several years, to capture my vlog. I aimed to utilize natural lighting by filming outdoors or near large windows, and when necessary, I supplemented with fixed lights and lamps I had at home. While filming, I was mindful of my background and positioned myself slightly off-center, adhering to the rule of thirds. I captured a variety of shots—close-ups, moving cameras, and fixed angles—to ensure I had ample footage for editing.

In my exploration of other YouTubers' content, I became a fan of video overlays, which add visual interest and depth. Thus, I incorporated them throughout my video. This approach also allowed me to focus on delivering a solid voiceover without getting overly concerned about the visual elements.

Chapter 2: Overcoming Challenges

The first video, titled "How to Edit Your FIRST YouTube Video (Step-by-Step)," offers a comprehensive guide to editing techniques essential for beginners like me.

Section 2.1: Navigating Software

For editing, I opted for Adobe Premiere Pro—software I had never used before. The steepest learning curve came from figuring out how to navigate the program. Thankfully, a quick Google search was a lifesaver!

Subsection 2.1.1: The Quest for Music

Finding Creative Commons music with commercial use rights that aligns with my video’s theme proved to be time-consuming. Moving forward, I plan to invest in a subscription to a stock audio and video service to simplify this process.

Section 2.2: The Acting Dilemma

After several days of editing, I asked my partner for feedback. She said, “I love it, but… you need to re-film all parts where you’re speaking to the camera.” My heart sank. She pointed out that I had been watching myself on the screen instead of looking directly at the camera—a rookie mistake!

Subsection 2.2.1: Equipment Insights

I learned that while fancy equipment isn't strictly necessary, it can be beneficial. In retrospect, I wish I had used an external microphone instead of relying on the built-in one. Additionally, I plan to invest in a basic ring light to enhance the quality of future videos.
