Mastering Rationality: How to Avoid Public Embarrassment
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Emotional Dominance
When emotions take the lead, our ability to think logically often diminishes. Emotional responses rarely solve issues; in fact, they can exacerbate them. So, how can we regain control? How can we prioritize rationality in our daily lives?
Section 1.1: The Link Between Emotions and Behavior
Various factors—such as circumstances, relationships, trauma, or even diet—can shape our emotional states, which subsequently influence our behavior. It's not uncommon to observe individuals who achieve great success in their careers yet struggle with unhappiness in their personal lives. They may act self-consciously in their professional environment, yet remain oblivious to their need for a fulfilling romantic relationship.
Subsection 1.1.1: The Dilemma of Rationality
Why do these individuals find it challenging to act rationally in both realms? To better understand this, we can categorize the issue into two types:
- Behavioral Patterns
- Behavioral Consistency
What Are Behavioral Patterns?
These are actions driven by subconscious choices. Behavioral patterns can become ingrained in us without our conscious awareness, often surfacing during critical moments as flaws in our character. Despite disliking these habits, they can be hard to manage, affecting others around us.
Example 1: David's Prejudice
David grew up in an environment where his parents harbored biases against a particular community. Consequently, he adopted similar prejudices without any personal rationale—merely mimicking the mindset of his upbringing.
Example 2: Rani's Silent Treatment
In conflicts with her husband, Rani resorts to the "silent treatment" for days, a tactic she learned from her mother. Although Rani recognizes this behavior doesn't align with her true self, she relies on it during moments of anger.
What Is Behavioral Consistency?
In contrast, behavioral consistency stems from conscious choices and is often viewed as a strength of character. These are habits we can control fully.
Example 1: Chef Mohammed's Hygiene
Mohammed diligently washes his hands for at least 15 seconds before cooking, a habit he formed to safeguard his family's health.
Example 2: Janet's Speech Improvement
Janet, after noticing her excessive use of the word "because" in her YouTube videos, decided to slow down her speech. Initially challenging, she adapted this practice and became more articulate over time.
How to Manage Behavioral Patterns
The first step in addressing unwanted habits is recognizing their existence. If you find yourself struggling with behavioral patterns that negatively impact your life, consider seeking guidance from a qualified therapist. Such patterns can hinder rational decision-making, but with awareness and effort, we can learn to control them and enhance our capacity for logical thinking.
