Additional Covid Vaccine Recommended for Older Americans

Written on

Chapter 1: CDC's Latest Recommendations

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Wednesday that individuals aged 65 and older are advised to receive an extra dose of the most recent Covid vaccine this spring. This booster shot is intended as a second dose of the updated Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Novavax vaccines that were introduced in the fall. It is important to note that those with compromised immune systems have already been eligible for additional doses.

During a session of the agency's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices that day, federal researchers shared preliminary findings indicating that the latest vaccines exhibit an effectiveness of around 40 to 50 percent against symptomatic infections and hospitalization. However, the estimates regarding their performance against currently circulating variants were derived from limited data.

It was reported that adults who received a fall dose comprised only 4 percent of Covid-related hospitalizations, whereas those who received a booster in the fall of 2022 but did not take the updated vaccine this fall accounted for 25 percent.

Despite this, the modeling presented suggested that a second dose this spring would not be cost-effective for adults aged 18 to 64, as they have a lower risk of severe illness and hospitalization compared to their older counterparts.

Section 1.1: Targeted Recommendations

The recommendation for a spring vaccination primarily focuses on older adults and those with weakened immune systems due to health conditions or medications, as these groups stand to gain the most from the additional shot.

Subsection 1.1.1: Expert Insights

Dr. Camille Kotton, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and a member of the scientific advisory panel, highlighted the necessity for an extra dose for older adults and those with compromised immune systems, underlining the heightened risks of severe illness.

Section 1.2: Vaccination Disparities

Data indicates that adults aged 65 and older made up the majority of Covid-related hospitalizations from October 2023 to January 2024. Notably, vaccination rates were significantly lower among certain groups, including Native Americans, Alaska Natives, rural residents, and pregnant women.

Factors contributing to the low vaccination rates include concerns over potential serious side effects, initial vaccine shortages, and confusion regarding insurance coverage for the shots.

Chapter 2: Future Vaccination Strategies

The decision regarding spring vaccinations follows discussions by the agency's advisers in September. A revised strategy suggests recommendations for the upcoming fall Covid shot, with advisory meetings scheduled for June. The Food and Drug Administration is set to convene its advisers on May 16, prior to the CDC's guidance.

During the meeting on Wednesday, CDC advisors debated whether to suggest that older adults "may" consider receiving a spring Covid vaccine after consulting their healthcare providers or to assert more strongly that they "should" do so. Ultimately, the advisors voted in favor of recommending that Americans aged 65 and older "should" get a spring shot, a suggestion that was subsequently endorsed by Dr. Cohen, the CDC director.
