Ruthless Elimination of Rushing: A Reflective Journey

Chapter 1: Insights from the Skies
Air travel often serves as a catalyst for deep insights. The combination of recycled air, the monotonous hum of the aircraft, and the inability to move can sharpen one's thinking. Perhaps it's the sensation of being encased in a metal shell soaring at 600 mph that triggers profound reflections. This may activate a part of our subconscious that is typically reserved for contemplating life's final moments. Whatever the reason, I find that some of my most significant realizations occur while flying.
Recently, I traveled to Oregon to reconnect with some of my closest high school friends. Over the years, the wild experiences we've shared have forged an unbreakable bond between us.
A quick note about lifelong friendships: They hold a unique significance. Beyond the reassurance that they'll always be a part of your life, there's a delightful aspect of playfully teasing one another about everything. When life throws a curveball at your best friend, the world may offer sympathy, but what they truly need is a hearty laugh—often at their own expense.
True friendship shines through in those moments when a well-timed joke can uplift spirits. I've found that nothing helps me shake off self-pity faster than a clever quip from one of my closest companions. While it may bruise my ego, it is incredibly healing for my spirit. Yet, when affection runs deep, the humor can sometimes hit hard.
As I reflected on the flight back home, I became more aware of an unexpected sensation: tranquility. It felt akin to taking a deep breath after a prolonged pause. With each inhalation, I considered what had contributed to this feeling of well-being.
Our weekend agenda was refreshingly straightforward: golfing on Friday and crabbing on the coast Saturday. Limiting ourselves to one main activity each day turned out to be an unintentional stroke of genius. This simplicity allowed us plenty of time to relax, chat, and enjoy each other's company.
On Friday morning, we leisurely prepared breakfast and sipped coffee for two hours, still making our 12:30 PM tee time without haste. Saturday's plan was just as laid-back—driving to the coast to catch crabs for dinner.
This experience highlighted how over-scheduled I've been in my daily life. A typical weekday has become a flurry of activities: waking up early, rushing to the gym, hastily completing my workout, grabbing a quick breakfast, racing to work, tackling a lengthy to-do list, and finally, dashing home to prepare dinner—all while trying to get to bed on time to repeat the cycle.
The most significant lesson I took from this trip was that less can lead to so much more: more quality time, more mindfulness, more laughter, and more memorable moments. It became clear to me that my tendency to rush has been a major obstacle to my overall happiness.
The solution? I must begin to eliminate rushing from my life with determination.
Re-learning to embrace a slower pace has proven more challenging than I anticipated. However, I've experienced small victories recently. I used to fill the 5–10 minutes before coaching calls with "productive" tasks like reading or engaging on LinkedIn. Now, I've opted to spend those moments in silence, allowing my mind to recharge. I've discovered that my thoughts thrive when given the chance to wander.
One surprising revelation has come from driving home in silence. Without music or podcasts, I've had a surge of creative ideas surface. It makes me wonder how many valuable insights I've missed by constantly consuming others' thoughts.
It's comforting to know that my own ideas are ready to emerge, provided I give them the space to flourish.
Do I still find myself rushing through parts of my day? Certainly. But like any new habit, my journey towards eliminating rushing will take time and commitment.
My aspiration is to navigate each moment with greater presence, focus, and joy.
