Unlocking Potential: The Power of Problem Solving in Leadership

Chapter 1: The Essence of Problem Solving
In today's discussion, I will share insights from Jim McKelvey’s presentation at Leadercast 2017. McKelvey, the co-founder of Square, emphasizes the critical importance of identifying and addressing problems in order to achieve success.
People often overlook the significance of their struggles. Relating personal challenges can create a deeper connection with others. My achievements stem from a dedicated focus on solving problems rather than merely pursuing success.
Identifying the right issues can lead to significant transformations. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a singular focus on purpose that drives success; rather, it’s the attention given to the problems we tackle.
Section 1.1: Understanding Problems
- Problems Are Evident
Recognizing clear problems can bring clarity to our actions. Have you ever felt lost at work, unsure of your objectives? Identifying the issues you need to address can help you regain focus. Chasing opportunities can often lead to confusion and overwhelm, as they are endless and ever-present.
- Solutions Become Apparent
When faced with a clear problem, the solutions become evident. Knowing your next steps can be incredibly empowering and fulfilling. In contrast, seeking external validation can lead to frustration. The satisfaction derived from solving a problem—whether alone at midnight or in collaboration with others—is immensely rewarding.
- Problems Inspire Action
Success is fueled by addressing the right challenges. Gratitude often arises unexpectedly. McKelvey's first venture, Third Degree Glass Fabricators, was born from his need for a workspace, as he struggled to find a place to practice his craft. Each of his businesses has been driven by the problems they were created to solve.
Subsection 1.1.1: Real-World Examples
His second venture, LaunchCode, aimed to address two significant issues: developing talent and providing opportunities for individuals excluded from the economic landscape. As a non-profit, this initiative focuses on inclusivity.
Square, McKelvey's third company, emerged from the problem of not being able to accept American Express payments at his glass fabrication business. The genesis of Square was deeply personal, inspired by a friend who, despite being a skilled glass blower, struggled to thrive commercially.
Section 1.2: The Journey of Entrepreneurship
Don’t chase opportunities; focus on solving problems. McKelvey reflects on his entrepreneurial journey, having started six companies, each time grappling with fear and uncertainty. He navigates the unknown, driven by the belief that solutions are just around the corner. He is committed to ensuring that no one has to suffer the indignity of being unable to participate in the economic system.
