As the prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow, so does the misinformation surrounding it. High-profile executives from billion-dollar enterprises frequently disseminate misleading statements, which are then carelessly reported as truth by journalists. This cycle has distorted public perception of AI, leading to widespread confusion. In this article, I will share my perspective, drawing from my experience as a lead developer and director in various AI-focused organizations. Our primary focus will be on one of the most misunderstood aspects of AI: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Will AI surpass human intelligence in the near future? Spoiler alert: Likely not.

What AI Really Is and Isn't

AI, a multifaceted and intricate technology, is often regarded as a buzzword rather than a concept requiring deeper understanding. Consequently, the term "AI" has been loosely applied to numerous technologies, ranging from blockchain to web 3.0 and other unrelated tech trends. This confusion has led many non-technical individuals to mistakenly equate AI with technology as a whole, further perpetuating the belief that AI is far more transformative than it truly is.

Just because a product claims to utilize AI does not guarantee its effectiveness. Moreover, even if a technology does incorporate AI, its mere inclusion doesn't enhance its overall performance. Imagine if duct tape suddenly became trendy; companies might slap it on their products just to boast about being "made with duct tape." While duct tape is indeed useful, such marketing tactics obscure its true value.

AI should be viewed as a tool—not a panacea or a divine entity. In many ways, it resembles the versatile yet simple nature of duct tape. While it can be applied in various scenarios, it has limitations and can easily falter when tasked with more complex objectives.

What AI Excels At

AI has gained popularity because it enables computers to perform tasks that were once the sole domain of humans. It can analyze images, respond to text-based queries, and even create stunning visuals and music. The rapid advancements in AI technology have led to its adoption across various sectors, allowing professionals to complete tasks more efficiently.

If AI is capable of performing these intricate tasks, is it not reasonable to believe it will continue to improve? If AI is already outpacing humans in certain areas, when will it master all tasks?

AI's Shortcomings

While I previously highlighted the sophisticated capabilities of AI, it's essential to recognize its limitations. To grasp why AI is often seen as "dumb," it's helpful to understand its operational mechanics.

Consider light. When it strikes a curved surface, it creates beautiful patterns known as caustics. A company named EPFL has developed methods to produce glass that generates art through this phenomenon. However, despite its aesthetic output, the glass itself is not intelligent; the creativity lies with the individuals who engineered it.

AI functions similarly—it processes input to generate output, but it lacks true understanding or intelligence. Think of AI as a series of filters that transform various inputs into outputs. Change the input, and the output shifts accordingly.

While some may argue that humans also respond to stimuli, the complexity of human cognition vastly surpasses that of AI. Humans have evolved over billions of years, developing intricate brains capable of adapting to various environments, while AI remains a mere imitation of human capabilities.

AI's Limitations in Creativity

Despite claims that AI can generate art or poetry, it's crucial to recognize that AI doesn't create original content; it replicates. For instance, when ChatGPT responds to inquiries, it draws from a vast pool of human-generated data to formulate its replies. This process is not true creativity but rather a sophisticated regurgitation of existing knowledge.

When users seek answers from AI, they often assume the system possesses superior intelligence. However, a deeper examination reveals that AI's responses are more akin to recall than reasoning.

For example, if you instruct an image generation model to produce an image without elephants, it may struggle to comply. The model has been trained on data that often associates images with specific keywords, leading to inconsistencies in its output. While AI can produce visually appealing results, it doesn't possess comprehension or awareness.

AI's reliance on human-curated data further underscores its limitations. The development of AI models demands significant resources, including extensive datasets and advanced computing power. Even then, the results can be inconsistent. AI systems frequently require human oversight to improve their accuracy and performance.

The CEOs of major AI firms are aware of these realities, yet they often amplify the hype to maintain funding. In contrast, many researchers who design these systems recognize the technology's shortcomings.

Conclusion

AI is far from the complexity of human intelligence. Its abilities stem from its design to emulate human functions, but even with substantial investment and effort, creating truly intelligent AI remains a challenge. While AI is a powerful tool with diverse applications—much like duct tape—it does not equate to intelligence.

Could AI achieve general intelligence in the future? Perhaps, but it might be more plausible to develop a "generally intelligent" duct tape first.
