Understanding Narcissism: Do They Ever Gain Self-Awareness?
Written on
Narcissists rarely attain genuine self-awareness as they age. Although it is possible, most live in a state of DENIAL AND DELUSION.
They not only reject their true identity but also reconstruct any reality they dislike; they simply recreate it.
> I understand that discussing politics can be triggering for many, especially during challenging times. This is a warning that I will address the narcissism evident in both political factions to illustrate how narcissists engage in denial and delusion.
I apologize to those who intertwine their identity and morality with political affiliations; I have cared for individuals across the political spectrum. Coming from a politically divided family, my exposure to both sides has ultimately enhanced my critical thinking.
A cautionary note for self-reflection: if you view one political party as entirely virtuous and the other as wholly malevolent, you may be exhibiting SPLIT THINKING, a common trait among narcissists. If you can think in shades of gray but find it distressing to criticize a political party, it might be time to acknowledge that you are trauma-bonded to harmful leaders.
I cannot afford the luxury of denial regarding reality. Thus, it is essential to voice these observations, as we are in a grave situation.
My Love for Humanity Compels Me to Speak
The denial of their true selves is especially pronounced in narcissists when their preferred politicians do not align with their distorted self-image. Narcissists exist across the political spectrum.
Democratic narcissists often overlook the current humanitarian crises to support figures like "grandpa Joe," another narcissist, who, like many politicians, seeks power and is—surprise, surprise—suffering from dementia, a condition frequently associated with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
They even deny his dementia. Recently, I witnessed two individuals adamantly insisting that his condition was merely a STUTTER, despite his long-standing presence in politics and his previously sharper performance.
When they cannot deny it, they often resort to gaslighting tactics, claiming, “Nobody asked Mitch McConnell to resign when he froze on camera.”
This is infuriating because, yes, we did.
Narcissists often masquerade as progressive advocates for freedom, using scapegoats but never acting in line with their professed values.
A Democratic narcissist, in an effort to never be wrong, will act as if LADIDA…he had a rough night but he’s a SAINT, just like ME!
Their Concern Isn't Politics—It's Ego
They prioritize ego, winning, and never being wrong over genuine political engagement.
You could present them with stark evidence of tragedy, and they would respond with apathy.
Their inability to feel empathy stems from their need to maintain their self-serving fantasies.
> (However, should their identity come under scrutiny, their perpetual victimhood will surface, and they expect us to advocate for them. Those of us who are genuinely empathetic would do so, as it's the right thing to do, but they would readily align with those attacking you. A true Catch-22.)
Conversely, Republican narcissists blatantly dismissed Covid to protect their idealized image of themselves and avoid the inconvenience of mask-wearing.
They often struggle to think beyond a two-party framework due to their inclination toward split thinking.
It’s All or Nothing: One Party Good, One Party Bad
They overlook the power they possess as citizens beyond just voting, opting instead to believe that voting is their ONLY power.
This is far from accurate: if that were the case, authorities wouldn't respond to our protests with violence and military-grade weaponry. Narcissists react violently when they feel their control slipping, using fear as a weapon.
Historically, such violence tends to reveal their true nature, leading to the eventual downfall of fascist regimes.
Our failure to recognize these historical patterns has put us in a precarious situation regarding economic and human rights.
Many are conditioned to argue that Democrats are slightly better simply because they articulate that human rights matter. However, this distinction reflects a covert versus overt sociopathy.
> There is fundamentally no difference.
A person cannot be deemed superior for merely stating “Black Lives Matter” while simultaneously enacting policies that lead to oppression and exploitation, evident in both parties' current and historical legislation.
Narcissists are indifferent to factual evidence or historical context. They are consumed by their fantasies.
Why Do They Ban and Burn Books?
They detest TRUTH that contradicts their illusions.
Their cognitive capacity lacks nuance; when I have attempted to explain complexities to narcissists, they appeared bewildered.
> (The truth is that our system functions as a one-party system—the imperialist party—and we are victims of manipulation, deceit, and division, a tactic as old as colonization. Globally, many recognize America as a one-party system, given our limited conservative choices and the media's ownership by wealthy conservatives.)
Attempting to present nuance to a narcissist elicits shame, which in turn breeds fear of you.
Misconceptions Across Political Lines
Democrats assume I lean Republican, while Republicans presume I am a Democrat. I have faced aggression from both ends.
I once had a therapist who was later revealed to be involved in a violent white supremacist militia. Whenever I expressed dissatisfaction with Democrats, her face would betray sheer terror, and her response felt like a mental reset. I grew increasingly frustrated as I had to remind her that I was neither party-aligned, despite my deep commitment to human rights and activism.
I often wondered, HOW MANY TIMES MUST I REITERATE THIS?!
Eventually, I discovered that the college president I worked for was also in that militia, leading to my abrupt termination for teaching literature by authors of color.
Healing from Narcissistic Trauma
The individual I sought help from for my trauma was herself a narcissist, compounding my suffering.
These individuals often occupy positions of authority, allowing them to present themselves as virtuous while exploiting vulnerable individuals, explaining the prevalence of abusive figures in various institutions.
I pursued legal action and received a settlement, but the institution viewed it as a victory to silence an anti-racist voice among their predominantly marginalized students.
My father, a staunch Republican and unapologetic racist, once questioned, “Why do people say fascism is right-wing? It’s left-wing.”
I replied, “Fascism is defined by the belief in authoritarian violence to address societal issues, and it can be either right or left-wing.”
An Awakening
He appeared genuinely unsettled.
I felt a twinge of compassion for him.
I sensed he was grappling with the possibility that he had harbored Nazi tendencies all along, and… he had.
Those who align with extremist ideologies often lack self-awareness.
They genuinely believe they are superior beings. All good.
Narcissists are the root cause of atrocities like the Holocaust or slavery; this disorder is far more prevalent than many realize.
Generational trauma escalates with each successive generation.
A Public Mental Health Crisis
This reality contributes to the alarming rise in mass shootings today.
Due to rampant narcissism and denial, the United States, which has the highest levels of narcissism globally, also recorded the highest Covid death toll—over a million lives lost.
During the early days of the pandemic, I found myself in the ER for a kidney infection.
While there, I overheard a woman in her final moments, a Covid DENIER, whose screams echoed the horror of the Exorcist. I’m not exaggerating.
She was shrieking and SPITTING AT THE NURSE!
The Last Words
In her dying breaths, she dec
