Chapter 1: Key Insights from Digital Transformation Leadership
For over four years, I have been at the forefront of Digital Transformation Management in my organization. In this piece, I aim to share some valuable lessons I've learned along the way.
1. Understanding the Broader Perspective
In the initial stages of my digital transformation efforts, my focus was on resolving isolated challenges with my team. However, I soon recognized the importance of embracing a broader perspective. This means creating solutions that are interrelated rather than addressing issues in isolation. A cohesive digital architecture that aligns with the IT framework of the organization is essential.
2. Emphasizing Change Management
Digital technologies have significant potential, but their true value is realized only through actual use. Many sophisticated solutions go unused because they do not meet the needs of end-users. To enhance adoption, it’s crucial to engage users from the outset, understand their requirements, and begin with a minimum viable product. This strategy paves the way for effective digital transformation.
3. Favoring Stability over Complexity
Digitalization poses risks, particularly when it intersects with established processes. Maintaining stability in existing workflows is paramount. By simplifying solutions, concentrating on fundamental issues, and allowing for user flexibility, organizations can achieve benefits such as increased robustness, reduced core development time, and enhanced user acceptance.
4. Essential Skills for Digital Transformation
As a Digital Transformation Manager, creating innovative solutions is just one facet of my role. Equally vital are skills in Change Management, Project Management, Marketing to communicate value, and Operations to ensure stability and rapid recovery from setbacks.
5. Sustaining Digital Solutions
Failing to plan for the ongoing operation of a solution from the outset can lead to its short lifespan. It’s beneficial to consider how to maintain functionality early in the process. This foresight allows for better resource allocation, enabling more time for exciting new initiatives rather than troubleshooting issues.
