Secrets of Extraterrestrial Encounters: Why They Matter

Chapter 1: The Need for Secrecy
Since the late 1940s, the United States government has undertaken various studies to gauge how an official announcement about extraterrestrial visitors might affect life on Earth.
The findings were somewhat troubling: a significant portion of the population seemed inclined either to attack the "invaders" with weapons or to view them as embodiments of evil.
In the late 1950s, the Brookings Institution conducted a research project, funded by NASA, aimed at understanding the long-term objectives of the U.S. space program and its societal implications. This study also examined the consequences of discovering extraterrestrial life and intelligence. It concluded that while the discovery of simpler life forms or a "subhuman intelligence" could be readily accepted, the revelation of a more advanced intelligence would lead to significant societal upheaval.
Historically, societies that were once confident in their cosmic status have crumbled when confronted with superior cultures, resulting in a transformative impact on their values and behavior.
Carl Gustav Jung, a pioneer in psychoanalysis, captured the essence of this potential encounter with a more advanced civilization by stating: “Our dreams would slip out of our hands; we would find ourselves without dreams, realizing that our intellectual and spiritual aspirations are overshadowed, leaving us utterly immobilized.”
Religious institutions, long viewed as the cornerstone of moral guidance, would find their fundamental doctrines challenged. Some followers might be compelled to recognize that there are multiple paths to divinity and intelligent hierarchies in the universe. Conversely, extremists might label all matters related to “aliens” as “the work of the Devil,” prompting them to combat it fervently.
Science would also face a crisis, as many principles currently upheld by various research institutions could no longer hold water. This would inevitably lead to a decline in public trust in scientific teachings, including those presented in schools. Concepts like “nothing can exceed the speed of light” might be rendered obsolete.
Should an official confirmation of extraterrestrial contact occur, the revelation of vastly superior technologies could trigger economic turmoil, leading to stock market crashes and business disruptions of an unquantifiable magnitude.
The military would encounter a dire predicament; there would be no feasible means to contend with a more technologically advanced civilization. Even if such a civilization arrived on Earth to promote universal love and peace, it would still present a challenge. As Scott Mandelker points out, “peace poses a significant threat to the status quo: peace would compel armies to disarm and police forces to scale back; the entire economic framework would have to shift away from conflict… For those in power, peace is a perilous concept.”
Moreover, any government privy to information about extraterrestrial technologies would likely prioritize secrecy to maintain its national security and competitive advantage over other nations. Even those unsure of how to utilize this knowledge would fear that others might exploit it for offensive or defensive weaponry.
Stanton Friedman suggests that a formal announcement regarding extraterrestrial contact could lead to an increase in church attendance and mental health facilities. However, he also notes that there would be a segment of the population that would embrace this news, transcending national borders and identifying themselves as “citizens of Earth.” Such a shift would challenge nationalism and the authority of nation-states, a transformation that no government would welcome. In essence, if authorities were to uncover evidence of an extraterrestrial civilization, they would likely go to great lengths to conceal this information.
