No, I'm Not Leaving Twitter: Standing Firm Amidst Change

Chapter 1: The Impact of Elon Musk's Twitter Takeover
Since Elon Musk took control of Twitter, discussions around the platform's future have intensified. Numerous celebrities, including Jim Carrey, Toni Braxton, Moby, Shonda Rhimes, and Sara Bareilles, have made headlines by publicly announcing their exit from the site.
In a recent appearance on The View, actress and activist Alyssa Milano expressed her determination to remain on Twitter. She firmly stated that she wouldn’t let Musk's controversial management push her away, emphasizing that retreating from dialogue only serves to limit perspectives and foster a narrow worldview. Milano highlighted the importance of standing firm in one's beliefs to engage with those who may share similar views or be open to persuasion.
Section 1.1: Diverging Opinions on Twitter's Viability
View moderator Whoopi Goldberg disagreed with Milano's stance, having been one of the first prominent figures to leave the platform after Musk's acquisition. Goldberg considers Twitter a "lost cause," often described as a “hellscape” by cohost Sunny Hostin. For her, the time and energy spent on Twitter are no longer justified, suggesting that alternative platforms might better serve the sharing of beliefs.
Milano acknowledged Goldberg's choice, asserting her respect for it as a necessary step for self-care. However, while I often find myself aligning with Whoopi's insights, I must strongly oppose her viewpoint in this instance.
Subsection 1.1.1: A Personal Perspective on Social Media
I recognize that my voice may not carry much weight on Twitter; I’ve never surpassed 700 followers. At this point in my life, I feel like a "nobody" compared to the likes of Ken Olin or Gigi Hadid. The decision to stay or leave Twitter may not significantly alter the landscape.
Here comes a quick plug: If you're still active on Twitter, feel free to connect with me at @eichy815! End of shameless plug.
The primary reason for my continued presence on Twitter is straightforward. Unlike the celebrities mentioned, I don’t enjoy the privileges that come with fame. Thus, I can't afford to be selective about the platforms I choose for sharing my thoughts. I must seize every opportunity available, no matter how trivial it may seem.
Section 1.2: The Cost of Anonymity on Social Media
During her segment on The View, Milano touched on the emotional toll that the negativity from anonymous trolls can take on users. I believe that if Musk truly aims to transform Twitter into a vibrant marketplace for diverse ideas, addressing the issue of anonymity is crucial. Instead of proposing a fee for verification, why not implement a one-time identity verification process?
This would mean that users, regardless of their status, would have their identities confirmed, and their screen names would be unchangeable. By doing so, we would have to stand by our words, lending credibility to verified users while diminishing the influence of anonymous accounts.
Sorry, Whoopi, I usually appreciate your insights, but in this case, I don’t have Musk’s immense resources or the platform you enjoy to share my views with millions. I’ll keep pushing through every avenue available, including my modest tweets.
Breaking the silence: Did I mention you can follow me on Twitter at @eichy815?
