Navigating Life Without Internet: A Day of Disconnection

Chapter 1: The Day Connectivity Vanished

The day began on a gloomy note when we woke up to find ourselves cut off from the online world. To our astonishment, we soon realized that our cell service was also nonfunctional. It's astonishing to consider how much we now rely on the internet in our daily lives. For instance, my smart home system suddenly felt like a relic of the past; the cameras were rendered useless, lights required manual operation (Oh, the struggle!), and even our digital locks were now just regular locks.

My wife's boredom reached new heights, as everything she typically enjoyed on her iPad and computer required internet access. Her favorite games were unplayable, and our streaming services were inaccessible. She lamented the inability to watch television, as we rely entirely on an online service. Living in a rural area of California, we’ve learned that traditional roof antennas do not function here.

I found myself facing similar challenges. Writing this article took an unexpected amount of time. I usually rely on Grammarly for proofreading, but without internet access, I was left to fend for myself without the usual red alerts for any errors. With no information on when services would resume, we felt as if we were transported back to a time before modern conveniences.

With my wife feeling particularly restless, I offered some suggestions to pass the time, which were met with that familiar look of disapproval. For instance, I proposed she pick up a book. However, I should have anticipated her reaction, as reading isn't her favorite pastime. In our 11 years together, she has completed merely four books.

Next, I suggested venturing into town to use the internet at a café, but she deemed it too hot to leave the house. I then floated the idea of shopping, only to be reminded that once the internet returned, she would need to switch back into work mode. Even a simple game didn’t pique her interest.

Realizing my wife's determination to sulk was unwavering, I ceased my attempts to suggest activities. Ironically, I've seen her spend hours doing nothing while on vacation.

Fortunately, I was in a slightly better position. As an avid reader, I have a collection of physical books waiting to be read, and I also had several e-books downloaded on my Nook, Kindle, and iPad. Additionally, I have a plethora of hobbies that don't require internet connectivity—perhaps too many, in fact.

Eventually, my wife proposed that we use this downtime to tidy up the house. This turned out to be a productive idea, allowing us to complete chores while we waited, thereby freeing up our weekend for leisure activities.

After about four hours, we began to regain intermittent data service. It felt reminiscent of the 1990s when connecting a landline modem meant waiting for AOL to load on the screen, or stepping away from your desk while a single image slowly appeared.

When we finally managed to load some content, we were alarmed by what we saw. Rumors circulated about significant cable cuts, echoing the themes of Ted Koppel's book "Lights Out," where he addresses vulnerabilities in our nation’s infrastructure.

If you’re reading this now, you know that our service has been restored after a 14-hour outage. Normalcy has returned, and my wife is once again engrossed in her true crime shows. This experience prompted me to reflect on our reliance on digital devices.

Would you know how to occupy your time in a similar predicament? I recently penned an article discussing how social media dulls our senses, concluding that it's beneficial to disconnect occasionally. Yet, witnessing my wife's reaction to this outage made it clear that such a situation could be challenging for many individuals.
