Understanding the Spotlight

In February 2023, I had the opportunity to experience the mesmerizing "Kurious" show by Cirque Du Soleil at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

The Lesson of the Spotlight

Throughout the performance, the directors skillfully directed the spotlight toward various performers and scenes. This technique not only highlighted certain moments but also granted the backstage crew the opportunity to prepare for the subsequent acts.

At first glance, this may seem quite obvious; after all, it is a live show! However, it sparked numerous reflections for me. I realized that sometimes, the spotlight shines on scenes that lack significance or grandeur.

So why would they choose to do this? The answer lies in the necessity of creating space for more impactful moments to unfold. By diverting attention to smaller, seemingly insignificant occurrences, the audience remains blissfully unaware of the preparations for the more spectacular scenes that follow.

This concept resonates beyond the stage; it is a common strategy employed to maintain focus while allowing vital work to be completed in the background.

The Power of Underestimation

Interestingly, I found that the more one is underestimated, the greater the potential for success. I have faced my fair share of underestimation, often feeling dismissed or misjudged. While this can be frustrating, it also offers a unique advantage: the ability to operate under the radar.

In essence, being overshadowed by the spotlight means you can work diligently without interruption. This may be a difficult realization, particularly when your aspirations drive you to be in the limelight. However, embracing this position allows you to cultivate something far greater than you might have imagined.

It’s an unfortunate truth that ignorance can often shield you from negativity. What others don’t know, they cannot spoil. When you perform your duties with humility, you may also avoid unnecessary envy or discouragement from others.

Building in Silence

The lesson here is clear: it is often best to build quietly, away from the spotlight. There’s nothing wrong with being part of a larger machine. For many, this is the most fulfilling way to navigate life.

However, if you find yourself dreaming big after clocking out, it’s essential to keep your ambitions discreet. The last thing you want is to stir jealousy or gossip among your peers.

When tempted to discuss your aspirations, remind yourself to hold back. Silence is a protective shield, allowing you to work on your dreams without unwanted scrutiny.

Looking Beyond the Spotlight

As I immersed myself in the performance, I couldn’t help but contemplate the intricate workings behind the scenes. While enjoying the spectacle, my curiosity led me to wonder about the efforts that often go unnoticed.

Every spotlight moment is backed by a host of unseen support. In "Kurious," musicians played, crew members prepared props, and performers engaged the audience while their colleagues prepared for their grand moments.

It’s crucial to remember that being in the limelight doesn’t necessarily equate to being the core of the performance. Often, the real magic unfolds behind the curtain, where the true efforts lie.

The Journey to Ownership

Maintaining humility is vital for growth, as it builds the resilience needed to eventually take center stage. When you finally do, you will have the power to direct the spotlight as you see fit.

By understanding the role of every cog in the system, you can foster kindness and support for others, whether they find themselves in the light or in the shadows.
