Chapter 1: The Power of Journaling

As we approach the mid-point of the year, it’s a great time to reflect on our New Year’s resolutions.

Historically, I’ve never embraced journaling. I thought it was merely a record of daily happenings, akin to engaging in trivial chatter with myself—which I find tedious. Yet, I have significant aspirations encompassing my mental well-being, relationships, career, hobbies, and overall enjoyment of life.

To genuinely tackle these dimensions, I needed a structured approach. Thus, I began exploring various resources, from books to online articles and contributions from other writers on Medium. A recurring theme emerged: the importance of mindset. I realized that wanting to change was not enough; I needed to rewire my thinking to make it happen.

That’s when I started journaling, although I didn’t initially recognize it as such. My method incorporated structure and intent, aimed at achieving specific goals. This practice allowed me to value the journey as much as the destination, as I could visibly track my daily progress.

Are you struggling to maintain consistency with your aspirations? Here are some journaling techniques that may assist you in shifting your mindset and staying focused daily.

Section 1.1: Gratitude Practice

Begin by jotting down three things you are thankful for each day. This habit can help you transition your thinking from self-criticism to appreciation. When striving for change, it’s easy to dwell on how we’re not progressing quickly enough or how we occasionally falter.

For lasting change, it’s vital to celebrate your small victories. Don’t feel guilty if you find yourself listing the same things repeatedly, especially when the weather is particularly pleasant. Consistently practicing gratitude will help you identify patterns that enhance your happiness and encourage you to seek out more things to appreciate.

Subsection 1.1.1: Reflecting on Emotions

How do I feel? How do I wish to feel? How will I achieve this?

This prompt resonates with me for various reasons. Occasionally, my feelings align with my aspirations, which is gratifying to document. However, initially, they often don’t match—and that's completely acceptable! Avoid self-judgment regarding your emotions. You control how much power you grant them, reinforcing to your mind that you have the means to improve your emotional state.

I admit I sometimes overlook the “how will I achieve this” aspect, but noting down tools to address negative feelings helps me release them.

Section 1.2: Affirmation Writing

Acknowledge the mindset challenges you want to tackle. This year, I aimed to bolster my confidence, particularly in my writing. Each day, I list three attributes I feel confident about, such as my problem-solving skills or my ability to support others.

On certain days, I might write the same affirmations repeatedly, while on others, I discover new facets of my confidence. If I’m feeling particularly low, I might simply write, “I am confident,” three times. I’ve also started documenting my achievements, as different words evoke varied positive emotions for each of us.

Chapter 2: Health Awareness

Tracking your physical well-being is crucial. Document how your body feels—whether tired, sore, or experiencing headaches—along with the quality of your sleep from the previous night. I also note my consumption of alcohol or THC and my physical activity levels.

I recently watched the Netflix documentary "Stutz," which reinforced the idea that our physical health significantly impacts our overall well-being. "Caring for our bodies is vital for establishing a solid foundation for a joyful and fulfilling existence."

After becoming more aware of my body's needs, I noticed the difference in how I felt after indulging in unhealthy food and drinks during social outings. By journaling about these experiences, I remind myself to prioritize my health.

Additionally, when I had my last physical exam, I could refer to my notes to discuss my health concerns with my doctor—something I often forget to do in appointments.
