Finding Healing by the Campfire: Reflections on Mental Health

Written on

The Power of Campfire Conversations

Experiencing the outdoors can be incredibly therapeutic. After an evening gathering with my wife’s family, she invited anyone interested to join her at the beach. The allure of a campfire and a cold drink on the shore was too enticing for me to decline. I eagerly followed her.

To my surprise, I was the only one to accept the invitation. We made our way to the beach, where we discovered a dying fire. After adding some driftwood, it transformed into a vibrant blaze. As my wife and I held hands, we enjoyed the mesmerizing flames against the backdrop of the moonlit ocean. I didn’t capture this moment with a camera; it was too beautiful to confine to digital storage—it was a mental snapshot worth cherishing.

About thirty minutes later, my wife, feeling a bit tipsy, jumped up to invite others. She asked me to tend to the fire while she made the short trip back. Soon, she returned with my brother-in-law, a bottle of wine, and two glasses—no beer for me!

We spent the next hour engaged in conversation around the campfire, and it became clear that there’s something deeply primal about fire; it encourages genuine communication and connection.

Exploring Deeper Connections

Our discussion revolved around their childhood experiences, which fostered a strong bond between them. Their upbringing was challenging, and while I can’t share specific details, it’s evident that adversity often leads to resilience. They are genuinely good individuals.

I found myself opening up about my own family dynamics, including feelings of jealousy towards their close relationship. I expressed frustrations about my relationship with my mother and brother and admitted to feeling indifferent towards my sister. Historically, I’ve avoided complaining, feeling guilty when comparing my situation to others. I’ve realized that even without being in the worst circumstances, I still faced struggles. Bottling these feelings only allowed them to take root and grow.

As I shared my feelings of disappointment regarding my brother, they acknowledged the support I had given him and agreed that I deserved a stronger bond. My brother-in-law listened intently and maintained a positive demeanor, refusing to speak negatively about my family, which I appreciated. Venting these thoughts was cathartic, even if part of me wished for validation through criticism of my family. Ultimately, I knew my feelings were valid, and that was enough.

This pattern continued when discussing my complicated relationship with my mother. My wife, unafraid to express her frustration, showed her emotions openly, which I found reassuring.

By the end of our conversation, I felt an incredible sense of relief. I’m learning to share my burdens, and I’m already feeling the benefits. Although I won’t always have a beach fire at Port Eynon, the mental image lingers. I now possess the ability to express my hurt and secure those feelings in a safe place. I’ve realized that I don’t need alcohol to loosen my tongue.

A Memorable Evening

As we prepared to return to the cottage, we ensured the fire was extinguished before walking back. My wife, slightly unsteady, stumbled into the soft sand. Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt. My brother-in-law and I helped her to her feet and made our way back. After a quick visit to the bathroom, she unexpectedly fell asleep on the floor. I gently woke her but she slid back down, unresponsive. I put a pillow under her head, covered her with a duvet, and asked her brother for help. He took one look at her and jokingly said, “Leave her there!” before heading to bed.

In the morning, he chuckled about it, mentioning that sleeping on the bathroom floor was a family tradition. My wife eventually woke up, sporting a headache but otherwise fine. I hold both of them dear and sometimes envy their sibling bond. However, I’ve come to appreciate my brother-in-law; what I lack in a brother, I gain through him.
