Are Fewer People Choosing Alcohol? Exploring Non-Drinking Trends

Chapter 1: A Shift in Social Plans
Recently, I received a call from one of my oldest friends. Typically, such calls involve invitations to social gatherings, which I often decline. However, this time was different.
After we caught up, he suggested we arrange a meet-up, noting how long it had been since our last get-together. I’m so accustomed to turning down invitations that I was curious about his proposal, expecting the usual response.
To my surprise, he offered, “I have a guest pass for my gym; let’s go for a workout, swim, and sauna.” I was taken aback and immediately accepted, even joking that my instinct was to say no.
This plan excited me, and as we chatted further, the topic of my sobriety came up. To my surprise, he revealed that he, too, was considering taking a break from drinking, wanting to see how it felt.
Interestingly, it’s not just him; his wife and another mutual friend are also exploring this path. I asked what prompted this decision, and he explained that he had lost interest in everything related to alcohol. A conversation with others led them to collectively decide to take a break.
This trend seems to be gaining momentum, especially among younger individuals, who appear less enchanted by drinking than previous generations. Personally, choosing not to drink has been one of my best decisions, and I have no regrets.
Even if this isn’t a permanent change for them, I believe they will still reap numerous benefits from this experience. I’d much rather engage in positive activities than indulge in excessive drinking.
I genuinely envision a future where sobriety becomes the norm, similar to the decline of smoking. Only time will reveal the full impact of this shift, but I’m fully supportive of it.
