Chapter 1: The Importance of Daily Vocabulary
Enriching your vocabulary can significantly enhance your conversations and overall communication skills.
"Words are forgotten just as easily as names. Constantly nurturing your vocabulary is essential, or it may wither away."
– Evelyn Waugh
In the years leading up to my retirement, a colleague and I began a fun tradition of challenging one another with a "word of the day." Each morning, we would greet each other and then ask, "What’s today’s word?" Occasionally, we’d come across a term neither of us recognized, prompting us to look it up. By the end of the day, we’d fully grasped the meaning of words like "hyperbole."
There are calendars available that present a new word each day, and I have one of these. It’s a wonderful way to enrich your vocabulary while also giving your brain a workout. Initially, my friend and I didn’t see it in such a light; however, we made an effort to incorporate the new word into our conversations throughout the day. It was enjoyable to find imaginative ways to use these words.
I genuinely believe that this "word of the day" practice enhanced my memory. Surprisingly, I could remember specific words and their definitions for extended periods.
You don’t have to stick to complex words or terms that don’t fit your discussions. If you don’t have a calendar, simply grab a dictionary. Nowadays, I tend to open my Merriam-Webster dictionary to a random page and select a word to learn.
Our enthusiasm for this "word of the day" challenge was contagious; we eagerly anticipated it. My vocabulary expanded rapidly as a result. We were also amazed to find that others participated in similar exercises, often expressing their surprise at how limited their vocabulary had been, frequently repeating the same words.
If you’re a writer or engage in writing often, introducing new words can add zest to your work. Your readers will undoubtedly notice the difference.
Parents can also engage their children in vocabulary-building through similar daily challenges. For instance, discuss a new word at the dinner table and encourage your kids to use their growing vocabulary in everyday conversations. This practice can be beneficial for the entire family, keeping everyone's minds sharp.
Engaging in word games together, such as Scrabble, is another enjoyable way to enhance vocabulary. There are plenty of online word games available as well.
What’s your word of the day?
Your comprehension of what you read and hear is largely influenced by your vocabulary, so it’s vital to enhance it regularly.
