Essential Mac Apps for Every Week: My Top 9 Picks

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to My Favorite Mac Apps

When it comes to Mac applications, I often find that once one truly resonates with me, it becomes an indispensable part of my routine.

This statement captures the essence of my relationship with apps. For any application to integrate into my daily workflow, it must be user-friendly, customizable, and, most importantly, provide a strong return on investment.

Today, I’m excited to share the nine Mac applications that I depend on the most. Could I manage without them? Certainly. But do I want to? Absolutely not.

And yes, there are nine apps listed here, not ten—so no need to fire me from internet content creation!

Section 1.1: Essential Security

Although Macs are generally less vulnerable to ransomware and viruses compared to Windows systems, they still require protection.

For this, I highly recommend the Premium Security Suite from Trend Micro. I want to clarify that they are not sponsoring this post, but they have been a long-term supporter of my YouTube channel.

This all-in-one solution offers device and identity protection, including a VPN, password manager, mobile security, and safeguards against ransomware and phishing scams—everything necessary to maintain online safety.

Section 1.2: The Password Manager

As a tech reviewer, I set up numerous Macs each year, which can be quite tedious.

However, my password manager has transformed this once arduous task into a breeze. I haven’t had to dig through insecure storage for login information in ages—it's simply delightful.

A password management app is non-negotiable. If you’re not using one, you should definitely consider it. I currently recommend Roboform, which you can get at a significant discount through this link.

Section 1.3: The Writing Tool

If you're a frequent writer like me, having the right tool is crucial.

I’ve tried various writing applications in the past, and I’ve learned that finding one that streamlines your writing process is essential.

Writing should never feel burdensome, and the app you use should facilitate the process. That's why I suggest using a distraction-free writing app that organizes your work without overwhelming you with complex menus. My go-to writing tool is Ulysses—if only it had a Windows version!

Section 1.4: The Calendar App

Calendar applications might not seem thrilling, but choosing the right one can be life-changing.

The right calendar app will ensure you never miss a meeting and make adding events a breeze. I recommend finding one that allows quick event input and syncs seamlessly across devices. In my experience, Fantastical is the best in this regard.

Section 1.5: The Email Application

Email applications can be as dull as calendar apps, yet finding a suitable one makes all the difference.

Once you discover the right email app, managing your inbox can become an enjoyable task. I’ve been a loyal user of Spark for ages. While it’s not perfect (the latest version has some bugs), it has integrated so thoroughly into my workflow that I can’t imagine switching back.

Section 1.6: The Note-Taking App

Interestingly, the only Apple app in this roundup is Apple Notes.

I rely heavily on it for organizing my thoughts and referencing scripts while filming YouTube content. While it isn’t without flaws, its simplicity and reliable syncing between devices make it a winner for Apple users.

Section 1.7: The Messaging App

As a content creator, I receive a multitude of messages across different platforms.

Managing these can be overwhelming, but I’ve recently found solace in Beeper.

This app consolidates all your chats into one interface, covering social media, WhatsApp, and even iMessages with just a few steps. It syncs across devices, making it an ideal central hub for communication.

Section 1.8: The Task Management App

I tend to forget tasks easily, which is why I depend on my task manager.

I switched from Things 3 to TickTick and haven’t looked back since. Its straightforward design and compatibility across platforms have been game-changing. However, any of the myriad task management apps available on the Mac App Store will do the trick; the key is finding one that fits your needs.

Section 1.9: The Time-Saving App

Continuing my theme of forgetfulness, I can’t overstate how valuable TextExpander has become for me.

These snippet-based applications let you store frequently used phrases or text, which you can quickly access with keyboard shortcuts. This has saved me countless hours over the course of a week.

You can grab TextExpander at a nice discount.
