Chapter 1: The Seminar Experience

A few years back, while I was attending university, I came across an extracurricular seminar led by a retired psychiatrist. Although I can’t recall its exact title, the memories of those two days have remained vivid in my mind.

She guided us through a healing journey into our childhood, where our fears and inner conflicts reside. The sessions were filled with reflections on both recent and long-buried memories, or at least I thought they were long forgotten. However, one particular activity transformed my perspective.

We were instructed to compile a comprehensive timeline of significant events in our lives, akin to an extensive resume but starting from our birth and ending just before the seminar. Staring at my blank page, I hesitated until memories began pouring in, and my hand instinctively moved across the paper. I ended up filling two pages with reflections on my school years, my initial au pair experiences, milestones like my first menstruation and braces, the divorce of my parents, early relationships, and various health challenges.

The room buzzed with the sound of pens scratching against paper as we all attempted to recall two decades of our lives. It was astonishing to see my life laid out in front of me.

Once everyone had finished, we looked up at her expectantly. She smiled and asked, “Take a moment to reflect. Are you satisfied with what you see? Or would you prefer to change certain aspects? Imagine having the ability to reshape your life according to your wishes, erasing the parts you dislike.”

Our minds raced with confusion, and it was evident on our faces. She repeated her question, and her words struck a chord with us. Can you envision removing the unwanted chapters of your life and replacing them? Essentially, she encouraged us to chase our dreams.

I fully embraced this idea, crossing out more than half of my written timeline. Surprisingly, I had much I wanted to alter. While my life wasn’t terrible, there were experiences I wished had never occurred: my parents' divorce, strict curfews, disputes with my mother, my father becoming a distant figure, the decision regarding my secondary school, and the health problems I endured.

As I examined this “new” version of my life, I nodded in satisfaction. Yet, something felt off. This life, though seemingly perfect—even including a lottery win—felt alien.

Then it struck me.

This wasn’t my life anymore; it belonged to someone else—a stranger. All those experiences, whether painful or joyful, had shaped who I am. I realized that I appreciated the person I had become. Yes, I had faced physical and emotional challenges, but they were integral to my identity.

Life has taught me that a smile can brighten even the darkest days. Crying is a natural response, and most importantly, I’ve learned to cherish what I have and who I am.

After all, why lament over spilled milk when you can savor a cup of tea instead?

Don’t dwell on the unchangeable past; it has shaped you into who you are, for better or worse. Instead, glean lessons from it and embrace your present before it becomes a memory tomorrow.
